And as our study shows, that outlook packs a punch at work:

Job satisfaction: Only 13% of pessimists like their job vs 71% of optimists.

Performance ratings: 24% of pessimists earned good reviews vs 75% of optimists.

Stress management: Just 14% of pessimists thrive under pressure vs 84% of optimists.

Problem-solving: 27% of pessimists vs 94% of optimists try new angles to fix issues.

Persistence: 27% of pessimists vs 93% of optimists refuse to give up when things get hard.

Learning from failure: 51% of pessimists vs 96% of optimists see mistakes as lessons.

Trust in people: 83% of pessimists vs just 4% of optimists assume coworkers will stab them in the back.

It seems pretty straightforward: optimistic employees hold an edge over pessimistic ones. Research from Lyubomirsky, King, and Diener (2005) showed that positive affect—the experience of emotions like happiness, joy, confidence, and enthusiasm—is linked to better performance reviews, higher productivity, and a lower risk of burnout.

But it’s not all sunshine. Sweeny and Shepperd (2010) found that optimism can sometimes come with a psychological price tag. In their study, optimists who confidently predicted strong exam performance felt sharper disappointment when results fell short, while pessimists, already braced for the worst, handled the setback with less distress. In other words, pessimists may actually be better equipped to cope with negative feedback.

Attitude and personality have a measurable impact on performance and workplace health. Even if you’ve got a technical superstar, a toxic attitude can poison morale and push others toward burnout or the exit door. That’s why personality assessments—alongside reference checks and good interview questions—are crucial in the hiring process.

References

Lyubomirsky, S., King, L., & Diener, E.
