The MLB Scouting Bureau started using PsychTests’ B.A.S.E. in 2007. We were looking for an assessment that would give us insight about the psychological make-up of draft candidates. We have a great system for assessing the players’ physical skills and talent for the game, but the mental side of the game was a missing link. No matter how physically gifted a player is, all the talent in the world isn’t enough if he crumbles under pressure, can’t control his temper, or cares more about his own success than the team’s. PsychTests’ B.A.S.E. helps us understand the mind of the player, shows us how he compares to his peers, what his strengths are, and what challenges he will need to address in training if he is drafted.

Rather than simply handing over their assessment, PsychTests worked with us, providing guidance on how to use the assessment to its fullest potential, writing detailed reports on how our teams performed in comparison to others, and answering any questions we had. PsychTests also created an easy-to-use administrative interface to help us manage the program with great efficiency. They run ongoing research to improve the assessment and shape it according to our needs. With 13 key traits to assess, including Focus, Coachability, Work ethics, Self-control and Competitiveness, we now have a tool that can assess a player’s mental capabilities and differentiate the best from the rest.
